The second Trump administration is expected to bring a mixture of continuity and change to US space policy. Changes may involve minor bureaucratic shifts, while continuity is expected in areas such as commercialization of NASA projects and the continuation of long-term space programs, including the Artemis program. There are uncertainties regarding potential changes to funding for Earth and atmospheric sciences, the role of the National Space Council, and the US ban on testing anti-satellite weapons. Revoking the ban could have implications for international norms and regulations in space and could impact the development of a UN treaty on space arms control.
Donald Trump’s approach to US space policy could throw up some surprises, especially with Elon Musk on board
Samantha Harvey's novel "Orbital" has won the 2024 Booker prize. The story explores the human cost of space flight in the face of the climate crisis. Set on the International Space Station during a typhoon in southeast Asia, the book delves into the astronauts' detachment from Earth and their contemplation of the planet's vulnerability. Harvey's prose highlights the tension between longing for the familiarity of Earth and the ambition to leave it behind. The novel serves as a poignant reminder of the urgency to save the planet as billionaires prioritize interplanetary exploration.

Scientists have discovered tentative evidence for a sulphur-rich atmosphere on an exoplanet located 35 light years away. The planet, called L 98-59 d, is 1.5 times the size of Earth and would be the smallest known exoplanet with an atmosphere if confirmed. The presence of sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide in the atmosphere suggests the possibility of a molten or volcanic surface. Further observations are needed to confirm the presence of these gases and to determine the origin of such an atmosphere.

A roboticist at Honeybee Robotics named Kris Zacny is developing a drill called the SLUSH probe for NASA's Europa Clipper mission. The probe would drill through kilometers of dense icy exterior to search for signs of extraterrestrial life in Europa's subsurface ocean. The SLUSH probe combines a drill with a heat probe that would prevent the drill from freezing in place by melting the ice chips as it descends. The probe could take up to two years to drill through the ice alone, and it is designed to eventually drop a submersible into the ocean to explore its depths.

Neptune, the eighth planet in our solar system, was discovered through mathematical calculations based on observed irregularities in Uranus's orbit. Being so distant, it took the Voyager 2 mission 12 years to reach Neptune and gather valuable data. Improving telescopes and observatories have since revealed new insights about Neptune's color, weather, and moons. Contrary to popular belief, Neptune's true color is not deep blue but a pale green-blue wash. The planet's strong winds, which blow at 1,200 miles per hour, are still a mystery to scientists. Additionally, it is believed that Neptune rains diamonds due to the high pressure in its atmosphere.
The Six Most Amazing Discoveries We’ve Made About Neptune
Elon Musk has thrown his support behind Donald Trump in the US election, committing millions of dollars to a pro-Trump PAC and appearing at his rallies. The outcome of the election could have significant implications for Musk's companies, SpaceX and Tesla, as they face legal challenges related to worker safety and environmental protection. Musk's decision to back Trump aligns with his views on the regulatory state, which he believes poses a threat to humanity. Musk's support for Trump could result in a reduction in federal regulations and agencies, although it may clash with his ambition to save humanity and make space exploration a priority.

Sustainability in space requires proactive action and shared best practices, rather than relying solely on regulations. Bridging the knowledge gap through AI-supported platforms will facilitate the adoption of responsible behaviors. Waiting for perfect legal frameworks will only delay progress. The space industry needs to act now, building on best practices and sharing proven solutions to ensure sustainable operations. This is crucial for the long-term viability of space as a shared resource, with implications for global economies, security, and innovation. Sustainable behaviors can be developed, shared, and refined using AI and machine learning. Collaboration and technological support are key to empowering the next generation of space actors to preserve space as a shared resource.
How to shape a sustainable future in space through responsible action
Earth's future after the Sun's demise may not be as bleak as previously thought, according to a study published in Nature Astronomy. Analysis of a star system 4,300 light-years away suggests that Earth could survive and even expand its orbit as the Sun becomes a white dwarf. The system, called KMT-2020-BLG-0414L, features a rocky planet similar in mass to Earth orbiting a white dwarf. The study's findings challenge previous assumptions about the fate of Earth and offer a glimpse into the potential survival of our planet in the distant future.

Researchers are using quantum sensing technologies to detect gravitons, with the aim of bridging the gap between quantum mechanics and Einstein's theory of relativity. Advanced quantum sensing tools, such as those used at LIGO, can detect gravitational waves and may also support graviton detection by measuring gravitational disturbances in lab environments. The progress in quantum sensing could provide new insights into phenomena like black holes and the Big Bang, and help confirm a quantum nature of gravity. Challenges include overcoming quantum noise and cooling the resonator to near absolute zero.
